UP (2009)

Well I went to see Disney Pixar's latest creation which I must say is possibly one of the best animated films that I have ever seen.

The Film begins with the usual "Pixar Shorts" which was this time called Partly Cloudy. Based on clouds which create babies and new born animals for storks to deliver to parents, but focused mainly on one grey storm cloud which creates the more sinister of animals such as Crocodiles, Electric Eels and Sharks for one rather dishevelled looking stork to deliver.

The story has lots of laughs as well as some tear jerking moments. I shan't say too much as it will spoil it for others.

Now onto the main feature.....

Up is a story about a old aged pensioner who made a living selling helium filled balloons when he was younger and lived with his childhood sweetheart Ellie. Ever since they were young Mr Frederickson had promised to take his wife on an adventure to Paradise Falls, but as time goes on this seems more and more unlikely.

Mr Frederickson is left widowed and facing eviction after attacking a worker at the site next door when he runs over the mailbox that Mr Frederickson and Ellie made when they first bought the house. This gives him the idea to take his house and Ellie on the adventure he always promised to paradise falls by tying hundred of helium filled balloons to the roof of his house and takes off on the adventure of a lifetime, without realising that he also has a tag along visitor in the form of a young boy called Russell.

A highly unlikely relationship blossoms between the young boy and the old man with lots of tear jerking moments throughout. The film combines laughter with real sadness which people can relate to and keeps the audience glued to their seat for an enjoyable couple of hours.

I would highly recommend anyone of any age to go and see this film.

Pocket-fluff

Ok so I have this website called pocket-fluff and currently it is a free website template site. Now it only has one template on it so the website is quite pitiful.

I want to create something new with it and something that will be extremely user friendly and will keep people coming back for more. I'm simply stumped for ideas, but would be interested to hear what you have to suggest?

I like a challenge so give me something to have a good bash at.

Suggestions can be left in comments.

Thanks

Bloc Party, Aberdeen Music Hall, October 2009 Gig Review

MY GOD!!!
Last night's performance was a million miles away from the previous time that I saw Bloc Party in Aberdeen. Given that the show last time was dampened by the actions of one idiot who was hopefully pummeled by anyone near him/her, I still enjoyed the show the last time but felt it missed spark from the band.

This time round actually blew me away. Kele and the guys were on top form and even had Kele sporting a new haircut, which looked rather dapper may I add. The band wowed the crowd with songs old and new and really interacted with the crowd.

It could be felt by me and I'm sure the whole crowd that the band were enjoying themselves which was reinforced by the fact that they came back to perform a second encore. That's right. Not one but TWOOOO encores. Finshing an astounding night with "She's hearing voices" and also Kele climbing the balcony and going for a swift jog around them before climbing back down to finish the song.

Best Moment's during that gig for me were:

1. Kele using some crazy voice warper on the "Lies Lies Lies" section of "One Month Off".

2. The Pioneers, Ares and She's Hearing Voices.

3. Matt's pants dance.

4. The Balcony Run.

I'm not lying when I say that this is one of the best gigs that I have been to ever and I shall most definitely be getting tickets next time round.

Don't stay away too long guys because Aberdeen Loves you.

Thanks Bloc Party

Tuesday 6 October 2009

Going to see Bloc Party Tonight.

Well it's been so many years since I last saw Bloc Party that the time has come again for them to rear their heads in Aberdeen.

After the last time I'm quite surprised that they have come back considering some idiot in the crowd threw a coin off Kele and caused them to halt the gig and walk off stage before coming back on 25 minutes later and giving a half hearted performance which was felt all through the crowd and to be honest it really put a big dampener on the gig for me and I'm sure everyone else.

Never mind though times have changed and they have decided to come back. I'm hoping that tonight will be a different experience and they will blow me away with their latest hits from the "Intimacy" album.

I'm most looking forward to "Biko", "Ares" and hopefully "So here we are"

Fingers crossed that all goes well and I'll try and get pictures for all.

How to get to Number 1 in Google

Everyone wants to be Number 1 in googles rankings as let's face it, this is the best way to get traffic to your blog/website etc and staying top for your required keyword is the most certain way of being able to ensure that the traffic keeps coming.

I will share some of the tips that I have gathered during my time with creating websites and dabbling my hand in the big pie that is Google and SEO.

Step 1: Deciding on Keywords

First you must begin on deciding which keywords you will aim for ranking well in.
I suggest using Googles Keyword Suggestion tool. This will allow you to put in words related to your blog/site and will spit out variations and tell you how much competiton and how often that term is searched. Aim to build on approximately three keywords rather than a lot.

Once you have decided on your keywords then start writing content that is related to your keywords and also contains your keywords no more than three times throughout the article/post/page.

Step 2: Getting Indexed

In order to get to the top you've got to be included in googles listings first. To do this you must begin by:

  • writing unique content
  • Ensure that you have well written H1 tags, title, meta description tags that contain the keywords that you want to rank for.
  • Submit your site to social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Reddit, Stumble-upon. (for a detailed list see the bottom of this post)
  • Submit your site to directories (for a detailed list see the bottom of this post)
  • Create a sitemap for your website using http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/, upload the sitemap to your server and then submit to google via webmasters tools.
  • Submit your site to google. http://www.google.com/addurl/
  • Make sure that you create a google webmasters account and submit your details to them.
This should be a good starting point for your website and should see your site indexed within a short space of time.
To check if your site is included in google. Follow these steps.

  • visit http://www.google.com
  • In search box type site:url replacing url with your website minus the www. part.
This will display all of the pages of your site that google has recognised and has indexed. Once you begin to see results that your website is indexed then you are one step closer to getting to the top.

There is still a long way to go yet.

Step 3:Getting a good ranking

In my opinion there is only one way of getting yourself a good Search Engine Ranking Position (SERP) and that is Backlinks.

In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

taken from wikipedia

Backlinks can be gained in many different ways, some of which you should avoid as google will penalize your website and may see you completely banned from Google and dropped from the rankings.

Natural Backlinks -
Many backlinks are achieved the natural way. When your website provides users with useful content, webmasters and website owners will often link to these useful web pages (on your site) for their website visitors to use. Most often then not, these sites that link to yours naturally are relevant to your sites content. Also known as "targeted backlinks", these types of backlinks are the most beneficial when generating quality traffic from them. Getting natural backlinks, however, is a slow process. These are built mostly on trust and gaining trust takes time.

Building Backlinks
One of the acceptable ways of building quality backlinks is listing your site in directories, posting in forums, and submitting to article directories. What you want to avoid is link farms, spam sites or sites that host illegal content, purchasing links in bulk, etc. An easy way to find sites that except these "one-way" link submissions is by using a backlinks finder.

Getting Listed in Directories
Getting listed in directories like DMOZ and Yahoo is a must because this is a way to get some quality backlinks for free and your site is easily noticed by search engines and potential visitors. Generally inclusion in these directories is free but the drawback is that sometimes you have to wait months before you get listed...or not listed at all. Top directories like DMOZ and Yahoo have strict guidlines when submitting, so follow the rules carefully. Yahoo also has a "pay for review" option that is costly and does not mean you will get listed. I would suggest submitting the free listing first, then wait a few months to see if your site is listed before considering the paid option.

Taken from http://searchbliss-webmaster.blogspot.com/2008/11/build-backlinks-smart-way.html

I personally don't see the value of DMOZ towards your SERP but that may be because I haven't personally seen the benefit of it.

I find the best way to build links is by blog commenting and forum posting. Everyone can join a forum that is of relevance to something they are interested in. Forums allow users to have a section called a "signature". This allows the user to place links into or images. This is a prime space to have your website link in and will give you plenty of free backlinks to your website as google is loving Forum posts at the moment. Please make sure that you read the rules of the forum before posting links in your sig as some forums don't allow it.

For blog posting there are plenty of tools out there that allow you to search for blogs related to your market or keywords.

The easiest way to find blog posts that relate to your website is to use google blog search.

You can then search by typing in a keyword related to your website. From the results returned you will then go through and leave a comment relating to the posts that you are commenting on containing perhaps your keyword as your name along with your url in the url field. Be sure not to spam this as there is a system called akismet that can detect spam and will block you from making further comments on every blog that has this installed which will kill this method for you and render it useless.

Building backlinks is a slow and painful process but it's the only way that I am certain will help achieve good rankings.

The more backlinks the better. Backlinks from a high Page Rank (PR) website will also help yours more.

You can also get backlinks by arranging a link exchange with other websites in your niche. This can be done by writing a short letter to the webmaster of the website you wish to exchange with.

Here's a nice sample letter I found via google.

Dear John Doe,

My name is Your Name, I am the webmaster for yoursite.com. I have visited your site, sitename.com, and I think that the content could be of interest to our web site visitors.

I have already placed a link to your site along with a description at www.yourstie.com/link.html If you want anything modified or if you have any other cross-promotion ideas, let me know.

I would appreciate if you placed a link back to our site. As soon as I am aware that you have done so, I will move your link to the top of the list in your category. If you put our link on your main page, I will also do the same for you. If you have a banner you'd rather use, let me know.

You can find our linking code at: www.yoursite.com/suggest-link.html.

Sincerely,

If you don't want to take the route requiring the most effort then the best way to gain backlinks is by writing unique content that people will want to link to on their own accord. This will be stuff that is interesting, easy to read and informative. People love good content and a well written informative article can spread over the internet like wildfire. Keep everything on your website fresh and constantly updated and you will prosper.

THINGS TO AVOID

DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN. These are the bad ways of link building and ways that will get your site banned from google quicker than you can blink.

These are known as black hat and the less said about them the better. Google does not like blackhatters and that will never change.
Black Hat SEO is basically building links using automated programs that will spam your link accross many different sites using different proxies and keywords. This is the effortless way of getting good rankings in google but are very hard to maintain and will inevitably end up in your site getting a big slap on the wrist and banished to the depths of google hell.

Other methods of blackhat can include keyword stuffing, hidden text and links, link farming etc.

Blog comment spamming is also included as black hat but if you're not spamming and actually making relevant comments about posts then I don't see who it's harming. :)

I feel that I've written quite a lot on this topic now and you must be getting bored.

To reiterate:

  1. Backlinks
  2. Unique Content
  3. Lots of hard work
These three will maybe not guarantee you number one in google but it will stand you in good stead to ranking well.

MAG beta

I am pleased to say that I was invited into the MAG beta for the PS3.

About MAG

The game will utilize a new server architecture[5] to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company.[6][7] Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system.[6] Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay.[8] The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.[3]

First in-game screenshot (from internal play sessions)

Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play.[6][9] The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes.[6][9]

First Impressions

This game seems to be pretty good and for having over 200 players, I have yet to experience any in game lag at all.

Graphics are okay but nothing that really makes me go ooooooh. Playing this game I have to keep saying in my head not to compare it to Modern Warfare 2, but to be honest I find it hard not to as it set the bar so high for online FPS. This game does have amazing online capabilities due to the fact that it can cope with up to 256 players in one game.

My gripes with the game so far are that it seems that you can't see a player at a distance but you can when you hover past them with your sight as a big red X and the player's name appear in front of you making it very easy to get killed from a long distance.

I think that all round the game is not too bad but it has a few things that I personally would change.

Perhaps that's what happens when you are a Modern Warfare fanboy....

Fifa 2010 vs PES 2010 *DEMO REVIEW ONLY*

There comes a time every year where nearly every football fan who owns a games console has one of the toughest decisions of his life, that is until now.

Every year EA and Konami battle it out to become the best football simulation game on the market and with PES dominating that market up until last year where FIFA 09 came a very close contender if not pipping PES to the title.

This year however is compeltely different. For me based on the two demo's being played on a PS3, I have to conclude that FIFA is a clear winner this year by miles.

Here's a rundown of my reasons why featuring the pro's and con's of each demo.

FIFA 10

pro's

  • Full 360 degree dribbling.
  • Licensed players and teams.
  • One Touch passing improvement on last year.
  • Player response time improved to near perfection
  • Graphics are stunning
  • Player AI is intelligent and feels just like a real person.
con's

  • Keepers AI can sometimes be a bit stupid.
  • ........
  • ........
  • It's very hard to find a fault with this demo.

PES 2010

pro's

  • Still the slick PES movement from the previous games with very little in the way of change.

con's

  • Player's faces are nowhere near a match for FIFA
  • Graphics feel somewhat dated.
  • Through ball's are still terrible.
  • Very little in the way of licensed team's/player's

Please remember that these are only based on the DEMO version of the games and may not reflect the final product once released.

For me this year I reckon I'll still buy both as most of my friends are PES fanboys and I enjoy playing them online. IF the PES version of online play is more stable than last years, but I will probably be found playing Fifa more on my own.

What will you choose?

Release Dates:

Fifa 10-October 2 2009
